when you’re here, you’re family.* the Olive Garden is a shitty Italian chain restaurant in the states. or, more pleasantly, it’s a sunny spot where I’m trying to grow olives.
planted some olive trees. they’re about twelve feet apart, and I’m hoping to train them into some sort of shady shape. I’ll grow some herbs &c under them. maybe build some sort of patio eventually.
*I’m sorry. really.

I’ve never checked, but I didn’t think olives were hardy enough to grow in zone 8. They seem very Mediterranean to me.

we’re pretty Mediterranean here. cool Mediterranean, anyway. we get all our moisture in the winter and hot, dry summers.
the first three olives I planted actually died over the winter, but I blame that on poor placement and lack of adequate mulch. I also wasn’t very good about watering the first summer, so they didn’t establish well.
five other olives survived the same winter just fine, though. they were in a more sheltered spot, though.
I’m sure that not all varieties will be hardy here, but it seems there are several Spanish varieties that will survive. survival doesn’t guarantee productive trees, but I’m quite certain it’s reasonable to grow olives in zone 8.
