still under construction really. But it should be finished in the next week or so, heated in winter to around 5degrees. when finished i intend on usng it in the winter to store my cool growing orchids and my collection of succulents, in the summer when these are outside it’ll revert back to its old use and be used for growing veg.

I know nothing about Aeonium. Might I be so bold as to invite you to hold forth on the subject? This is an impressive collection. I’d love a little context. Are they fragile?

No defiantly not fragile, most of mine came as cuttings from the scillies they were left at the bottom of my back pack for about 3 weeks before I potted them up then they rooted in about a week some even started before I got them out of the bag.
The genus has around 50 species of these only 6 are found outside the canary islands these are found in the atlas mountains and in Ethiopia (they started to evolve before the Sahara formed so the populations were later cut off). Most of the genus is made up of succulent and semi succulent shrubs but a small number are monocarpic and only form a single rosette which flowers once then dies.
Most of the plants labeled as species in garden centers are hybrids or unrepresentative of the type. They hybridize quite easily there are even some Intergeneric hybrids with the closely related genera Greenovia which is also endemic to the Canaries The best known and most commonly available is A. Zwartkop which I’ve had down to -5C with only a small amount of damage its even been covered in snow. I grow them in a mix of 3 parts sand, 2 parts multipurpose compost or topsoil, with the plants that need more drainage than that I add 1 part sharp grit. I stick them on my roof in summer where they get more light and I don’t bother to water them in the summer only from September to the end of October then from March to May.
Anything else you wanted to know about them?

I have had an Aeonium for a number of years. The original plant became so large branches broke and I divided it into a number of plants. In my climate where temps over 100 degrees F. are common in the summer it likes to be in a little morning sun but does well in the shade.
Thank you for giving me the proper name to the plant we call Firecrackers. It is always in bloom for the 4th of July celebration.
Thanks for all the help on all the other plants, I just discovered all your comments.

Wow I love your Aeonium collection- I just picked up my first two Aeonium plants at the weekend after admiring my friends’ for ages, then was given a cutting by chance yesterday of what looks like a different variety.
I’m glad you know so much about them because I’m still very much a beginner. Look forward to keeping track of your collection.

Thanks, If you need anything just ask. The plan is to set up the national collection of Aeonium eventually, but I think thats a wee while off.
