growing some nuts. food from the sky, I tell you. manna. nut trees seem like a much better way to get carbohydrates than annual grains and tubers. too much work and disturbing the soil involved with those. nuts trees take a while, but they’re productive and easy and quite a few will live for 200 years and more. a little more advance planning is necessary, but it would be pretty excellent if folks several hundred years from now are still eating from trees that I planted.
this garden will probably take twenty years to be at all productive nuts-wise, so I’m planting some other stuff in the mean time. as the deciduous trees get bigger I’ll be planting a lot of ramps in their shade and phasing out most of the fruit trees.
