We needed a place to dump clay before taking it to the dump. When digging up the clay, we had found the previous owner had been gardening on that very spot — instead of clay we found topsoil.
That was in 2008. In 2009, we opened up the plot, nearly doubling its size. We dug down deep enough to find 1) there was clay, and we took out more than a trashcan’s worth. 2) The mint from 2008 had spread, despite my best intentions and 3) this would be a lovely place to put the remainder of the compost.
We’ve got summer squashes growing right in the mix of about 3/4 composted table scraps and about 1/4 clay-soil mix. They seem happy about it, so far.
