As it is unacceptable to have dutch irises starting to grow in October, something had to be ‘rethunk’.
There’s a crawlspace under the sunroom that is easy to access. It even has electricity and a light. I’ve never used it for anything but assume it was meant for some kind of storage. There’s no heat in there and should get quite cold in winter but probably not freezing.
So the new plan is to pot up the dutch iris bulbs that still haven’t arrived and maybe buy some tulips to pot up as well. Poppy anemones? Hyacinths? Daffodils? Why not? There’s plenty of room in there for all sorts of pots of bulbs for spring bloom. I won’t exactly be forcing them. Actually, I won’t be forcing them at all. But I will bring them out in a staggered fashion for blooms in March & April. Maybe even May. And perhaps this is a better way to grow those dutch iris, anyway. I suspect the tulips will like being dried off well each summer and repotted in the fall. Maybe dutch iris feel the same?
A new garden!
