The garden bed around the rainwater tank initially contained ornamentals. I have been slowly moving the ornamentals to other areas and replacing plants in this bed with edibles.
It is particularly convenient to start seeds on the raised shelf in the propagating area, then as they grow, transplant them to the garden beds below, or even to sow direct to the bed. During the dry season it is far more beneficial to transplant to here rather than the vegetable patch due to the proximity to the water supply and the house.
It has been necessary to fence the garden bed with bird wire to deter the ducks from eating the vegetables. When it initially only had ornamentals they would forage through the soil for insects, and not touch the plants. When they discovered the occasional vegetables this required a quick refit of the bed.
An outdoor organic garden located in Bambaroo, Australia, Carol's [27] Rainwater Tank Food and Herb garden currently contains 5 plants.
This is a Edible garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 11. It has mainly Clay Loam soil and receives Full Sun light.Photos
