Okay, it’s not really a Japanese Garden. I’m certain it doesn’t follow the principles of a proper Japanese Garden however, it does have that peaceful, tranquil feeling. And it’s still very much a work in progress. The narrow area between out deck and the property edge could best be described as ‘scrub’ until three or four years ago. Just a forgotten place that you could use – if you really wanted – to access the front yard from the back or visa versa. It didn’t even really need mowing as grass wouldn’t even venture into it. I mulched the area with bags and bags and BAGS of leaves and gave it all a good dose of organic fertilizer. Down the center, I’m working on ‘installing’ a pine needle path. You know… everyone complains about having to get rid of pine needles but when you try to get them, they’re really hard to come by. So far, my path is only four or five feet long. I need more pine needles! Five Hall’s honeysuckle climb up the deck on one side, behind various hosta. On the other side are columbine, bleeding heart, shooting stars, primroses, dog tooth violets and more. When it’s all done, I really think that this will be one of my favourite spots in the garden.
2011 – put to bed for winter on November 2nd
