hotwired's Bartering garden
Garden Type: Zen | Sun: None | Soil: None | Established: 2010 | Organic
This garden is used for recording crops that I barter. I grow large volumes of strawberries which I trade 300-400 pounds for crops that I don’t grow. I trade strawberries for blueberries, peaches, apples, pears, cherries, potatoes, chickens, pig-halves, and other items. It is very difficult to grow all the produce, fruits, poultry, and pork that we would need to be self sufficient, so a few of the local gardeners and growers specialize in raising crops that we can grow well, and then barter with each other.
I have a 8′ × 12′ underground root cellar with access from our basement, down a stairs and through a walk-in freezer door. It has a poured concrete walls and sides and concrete ceiling, covered with 36" of soil. It maintains a 45°F – 57°F temperature year-round. I also have an upright freezer, and two chest freezers for food storage.
