The little house that we rent in Mexico is part of a larger compound owned by a brother and sister (and his wife and her husband). Inside the compound are their two large houses and our very small, very beautiful house. Also, there’s a vacant lot that they had thought about building on but realized that renting a nice house (like ours) is not so easy. So, after the little Jardin was pretty much full, I asked permission to start putting plants into the vacant lot. In July 2011, Frank, the husband of the sister, and I agreed to do a fuller plan for a garden in the plot that he would help to fund…not that it will take a lot of money but still it will take some and it’ll be nice to share the space. He’ll pay for the removal of grass and the adding of top soil and manure. I’ll provide the plan and the plants and some mulch. He and his wife will figure out garden furniture. So, here we go.

Basically, I want a backbone with some fruiting trees and shrubs: a tangerine tree, a pomegranate bush, and maybe another citrus for the smell. Around those, we’ll have walkways (the current grass) and beds with a tangle of plants that do well here without a lot of fuss/bother/care…the Tough Guys. A mixture of flowers, herbs, and maybe some perennial chiles. The large grassy space has attracted little life other than some grackles but I hope to see a larger range of bird, bees, butterflies as they discover the plants and flowers.

An outdoor organic garden located in Decatur, GA, United States, HPByrd's El Jardin Grande garden currently contains 12 plants.

Situated in a Full Sun position, this Flower garden is located in USDA Zone 7b.
