DanaG's Indoor Tomato garden

Garden Type: Indoor | Sun: Fluorescent | Soil: Potting Mix

Just an experiment to see if I can grow tomatoes, in this case Tiny Tim, indoors in the smallest area possible.

It’s a simple frame made out of 1/2 inch PVC pipe and fittings from Home Depot, 14" deep by 18" wide by 32" high, covered with “Panda Film” (6 mil opaque plastic, white on one side and black on the other) that I bought from Amazon.

It just fits on top of a two-drawer metal file cabinet.

The light is a 100 watt equivalent (27 watt actual) CFL in a clamp-on reflector housing, both from Home Depot.

Edit July 16, 2011: I added a second CFL.

Edit Mar 25, 2013: I forgot to mention that last year I replaced the Tiny Tim with a Totem Hybrid. The tomatoes are larger, milder but fewer than Tiny Tim. The picture is still shows the Tiny Tim.

DanaG's Indoor Tomato garden is an indoor garden and is located in Boxford, United States and currently contains 1 plants.

This is a Indoor garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 6. It has mainly Potting Mix soil and receives Fluorescent light.

    Yes it did.

I originally grew Tiny Tim tomatoes and they did very well under lights, but I thought the tomatoes themselves were too acidic.

Then I tried 3 varieties to replace it; Red Robin, Totem and Tumbling Tom.

I had the most success with Totem. The tomatoes were larger and milder, but fewer than Tiny Tim.

It’s about a year and a half old now and still produces an occasional tomato, but looks so bedraggled I don’t want to post any pictures.

I’m taking cuttings of it to try to keep it going.
