Approx 8’ X 7’ area outside picture window in living room. Raised above backyard by retaining walls due to slope. This is main birdfeeding area…a couple feeders, a birdbath. The cats (and I!) love to sit on the extremely wide sill and watch for hours.
Aim is to fill with perennial and annual flowers to attract birds (esp. hummingbirds) and butterflies.
In April, laid down black plastic, mulch, bricks and stepping stones to form central area to tend to plants and fill bird feeders and bath.
Planted English Daisies “Tasso”, Lupines “Russell Hybrids” and “Tutti Frutti”, Hollyhock “Creme de Cassis”, Buddleia “Black Knight”,Achillea “Summer Berries”, pink Honeysuckle, Foxglove “Candy Mountain”, Chinese Lanterns, Oriental Poppies “Fruit Punch”, Marigold “Scarlet Starlet”, Potentilla “Melton Fire”, Kniphonia “Pfitzeri”, Penstemon “Iron Maiden”, Echinacea purpura, Gaillardia “Goblin”, Sweet Peas “Floral Tribute”, Trumpet Vine, Salvia (red- forgot which variety). Already there were some evergreen hedges, ferns, and a pink rose mallow planted last year.
After turning at least a dozen area squirrels into big fat MFers over the last couple months with my bird feeders, decided to take them all down save for some thistle socks for the goldfinches and chickadees, and the window feeder and a hanging basket of salvia visited constantly now by at least one pair of ruby-throated hummingbirds. Chipmunks still visit, which is fine as they aren’t such audacious gluttons and seem so benignly busy and sweet.
Birdbath has a little solar fountain to attract visitors, and I also put in a single solar stake light to attract evening moths and thus perhaps a hungry toad or two.
A huge lilac just off the raised area just finished up…it was magnificent.
