Thelma and Louise were the original residents in the swanky pad you see here. It’s a covered run with state of the art coop made from stuff we had on hand (except for the corrugated plastic for the run’s roof). In 2012 we added an extra “wing” to the outdoor run area. There just wasn’t enough room for a scant-dozen girls if they had to stay in due to crummy weather.
The coop has two perches at the window height (and yes, the girls do look out in the mornings), and four nesting boxes. Outside in the run, there’s a monkey-sized door into the coop, another monkey-sized door into the run, then a chicken-sized door out into the yard for the girls’ free range pleasure.
They turn the straw and veg scraps into lovely mulch for my garden, and ultimately compost. They also eat the seed heads off of the grass and often the flowers from the dandelions. And slugs … don’t forget the tasty slugs!
Thelma and Louise are no longer with us, but we have eleven girls in the Swanky Pad now. Abby (who is the sole survivor of the previous flock) shares it with the new kids, though we haven’t named them yet.
