I am trying to fill a 200sq ft garden bed that surrounds my house. When I first started the soil was poor and full of pebbles and rocks. Last year it was basically bare with a couple of neglected evergreen shrubs. I’ve planted a few perennials and flowering shrubs so that they will return every year keeping things easy and inexpensive. I also planted some showy annuals that I had sowed indoors early March and then transplanted early May. They are hiding the parts of the garden where the perennials had failed to come up. I especially like the red germaniums and assorted herbs in my window box. Currently, I’m at war with ants and aphids but can’t bring myself to lay down any type of poison. I’ve tried baking soda, cayenne pepper, coffee, planting onions and shooting water down there ant holes but they just keep rebuilding again…sigh.
