This is approximately 1/4 acre of clay, rock, mostly untended grass, ancient willow trees, and three equally ancient fruit trees. All were here long before we were.
Portions of the yard bake in the summer, and turn to a marsh in the winter. The neighbors before last, built their yard up along our fence, so the water no longer drains properly. We’re still trying to figure out what to do about that.Slowly but surely, we’re coming up with ideas for working with what we have. There’s a shady woodland section in the back left corner that will be ideal for native, shade-loving plants. I think that will be next year’s project. Opposite it, it’s all sun all the time, and I hope to build out from the slight raise and have a section of native viburnum and other bird-loving, sun-loving plants.
For the rest? That’s where the chickens roam. Someday I’ll have a greenhouse back there as well … oh yes. I dream of having a place to garden even in Seattle’s grey winters … garden and write. Because the wi-fi makes it all the way into the back yard!
Big yard. Big dreams.
An outdoor organic garden located in Seattle, United States, KathN's Backyard garden currently contains 17 plants.
This is a Backyard garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 7b. It has mainly Clay soil and receives Partial Sun light.Plantings
