After years being dragged around the country in pots, my lavenders were beyond thrilled to get somewhere to grow huge and happy in. They were also bemused that years of creating a very sandy potting mix meant I was poised to dig in lots and lots of sand into the border…until I remembered “I live by the sea, the soil is pretty much sand anyway”. Well, at least the neighbour’s got to hear me laugh myself stupid for some time. The neighbourhood cats can also particularly recommend the soil, it’s their litter tray of choice.
It’s a border. It’s full of lavenders. Occasionally I let other plants in there too. If the landlord asks, no it’s not considerably deeper than it used to be. Also no it doesn’t dogleg into an entirely new bed in front of the deck where the step up used to be. It’s the bit of garden I see all year round from the house and is backed by a “proper” fence (the concept of straight is rather subjective apparently) then some towering leylandii. They’re actually not a bad thing there as the sun beats down onto that bed so they give a tiny bit of respite for the sweet peas I grow up the fence in Summer.
