This garden came about from necessity. My soil was so stony and clay-y that nothing wanted to grow here, and every time it rained, the place would turn to mud. I dug up thousands of stones out of the ground with my bare hands (well, actually with hand tools), and brought in a dump truck full of compost, which sounds like a lot, but was barely enough to spread about 3 inches worth of compost over the clay (though it did take me a full year to do so by hand). Anyway, I had a giant pile of stone left, and no idea what to do with it. Voila! A waterfall with 2 ponds. And when I say: “voila”, I mean it in a hard, slave-labor, back-breaking sort of way.
Fast forward about 10 years, and one tiny baby Koi later, and sadly the garden needs an overhaul, in order to accomodate the no-longer-tiny Koi, which is growing at an alarming rate, as we speak! So this year, I will have to enlarge the upper pond for Fred’s (the Koi’s) use.
An outdoor organic garden located in Vernon, United States, sheepandwool's Water garden currently contains 16 plants.
This is a Water garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 6a. It has mainly Clay soil and receives Partial Sun light.Photos
