We cut down an old silver maple. We hated to see it go, but it had suffered multiple lightning strikes, lost significant amounts of bark and started to get rot in the core of the trunk. It needed to be cut down because it had multiple limbs in danger of falling on nearby structures.
We mounded 3 to 4 yards of dirt on the stump, which had been cut level to the ground, and are now in the process of building it into a nice green divider in the back yard.
