This is where i will record our egg records! (thank you for the idea macchick!)
We are so very excited about owning our very own feathered friends…yep…we are a bit romantic about it but do have some experience with chickens as well as the smaller pet type feathered beauties…so we have some reality too…
…but for now? i am sticking with the romanticism of it all!
the children were allowed to each pick one laying hen to call their own (this makes 3) then mama and daddy will pick out 5 or 6 more.
1 blue cochin bantam for our oldest, sierra, who is nearly 13
1 black sex-link for our oldest son, cyrus who is 9
1 araucana for our youngest, harrison, who is 7
mama and daddy’s choices:
1 barred plymouth rock
1 golden sex-link
1 buff orpington
1 brit red
1 new hamshire red
1 black australorp
i want to add a turken but my husband is not so sure he can tolerate looking at their naked necks!! haha!
An outdoor organic garden located in Nampa, Idaho, United States, gloryngracefarms's Hippy Chicks garden currently contains 6 plants.
Situated in a Partial Sun position, this Edible garden is located in USDA Zone 6a.Plantings

Best of luck! We got our first chickens last spring and they’re coming through their first winter. It’s quite satisfying to gather beautiful handfuls of eggs every morning. I think I’ll always have to keep chickens now. We have 6 laying hens (all different breeds) and couple roos. What breeds will you raise?

thanks for the comment joshnrichelle! and welcome to folia! i posted a journal called chick, chick, chickens that lists them but since this is the garden page probably a good idea to do it here…thanks for the questions!!!
your comment about gathering beautiful handfuls of eggs each morning confirms my happiness in the timing of getting them now.
how is it working with the roosters? we have for the time decided to not keep roos. what breeds do you have? i love seeing pics of chicken houses, areas too…have any?

We ordered one rooster and ended up with two which I’m afraid won’t be sustainable. I do like the idea of having a roo around to help protect the flock especially since we allow them to free range a lot. It was great fun last year picking out the different breeds.
We ended up with-
barred rock
2 easter eggers (araucana crosses) one lays blue and one lays green
speckled sussex
gold laced wyandotte
welsummer
welsummer roo
black australorp roo (this one was a mistake)
We have a coop we built ourselves last year. I’ll try to get some pictures of it in my journal. Have fun!!
