For many years the area where this patch is located was a dense mass of tropical plants that had not been cared for. It was pretty much a jungle.
I cleared it at the beginning of 2008 to let more light into our backyard, to allow access to the mango tree for a severe pruning, and to create space to plant a row of golden cane palms which would more effectively provide privacy screening without limiting light too much.
Once cleared, I noticed that over the years the garden had increased in depth due to the composting of leaf and branch matter, mangoes and dead animals. It is a naturally created composted raised garden bed. Digging a hole revealed about 60 cm of good quality loamy soil which surely would be good for growing fruit and vegetables. It seemed too good an opportunity to miss. Hence the Fruit and Veggie Patch was born.
I mulched the pruned mango branches and leaves (got a professional in to do the big branches) and this was spread about 10 cm thick across the whole patch. The family helped me install a one metre high wire fence around the perimeter of the patch, to keep the dogs out.

I am finding your garden fascinating – it could hardly be more different from mine. I will looking forward to our winter when we are under a metre of snow (at least) and you are gardening through a tropical summer. Plus being on the western edge of North America, most gardeners are tucked up in bed by the time I am hitting my computer but you are just getting up and into the garden.
Cheers

This is what I love about Myfolia – the opportunity to interact with gardeners all over our planet. I am continually amazed to find that across the seasonal and climatic differences, there are often similarities. And interestingly for me, my tomato growing season perfectly matches that in the temperate northern hemisphere. The tropical summer here is too humid for tomatoes, so I grow them April – September, which is winter for the rest of Australia.
