The clay here is really hard work and that together with my back are my most limiting factors, together with economy needs. In my head the garden grows enough for all my needs plus surplus for friends & family but in reality has a long way to go. I do have a Mantis but it’s no good until the ground is broken first so it sits in the shed. I have used it on a patch of ground which had pallettes stacked on it for some time (disadvantage: chopped up all the thistle roots which each grew) but which still needed breaking by fork first of all (broke fork handle).

Decided on beds:
Started out with (1) Linkabord 1mX2m
Added (2) 2009, cobbled by me from wood scraps & modified 2010
Added (3) 2010, wooden 1msq
2010 4) small, hinged-corners, wooden assemblage from I know not what, salvaged by dear son 2.
2011 (5) Black recycled plastic experimental lasagne type construction.
2011 (6) Narrow deep box bed part filled.
2011 (7) Another smallish, hinged box which I have since learnt is a pallet holder.

Covered area in prep for more beds.

Also tyre stacks, bags and any likely container for potato growing.

The linkabord bed was demolished by a car coming off the road and landing up on top of it early 2010 so had to be replaced (both compost bins – recycled plastic – flattened too). I have a comfrey clump which I use for making liquid fertiliser and putting in tomato pots and potato bags and any likely planting holes. Any surplus boosts the compost bins.

Hoping to erect new compost bins constructed from pallets this year (2011)

Main photo shows beds area as at August 2011. Bottom left is the corner of the wood pile in process of a tidy up. Bottom right weedy bit is corner of the greenhouse site.
