My first-ever vegetable garden, otherwise known as “gardening by google” (because I have no idea what I’m doing and I google everything…) Wish me luck!

The ground level of the raised bed is about 6 inches lower than the ground level of the lawn on the edge closest to the house, but flush at the back fence. There’s some buried concrete at the edges of the depression – it used to be a foundation for some sort of shed. The edges of the raised bed are resting on that layer of buried stuff, but the area on the inside of the bed is clear. However, a lot of small rocks seem to be working their way up. The top 8 inches of soil has a bit of a gritty feel, despite the amount of compost I’ve added. Below that, things start resembling clay.

The center of the patch gets full sun pretty much all day; the edges of the bed get an hour to two hours less.

Gardening by Google is also how I did my first (grownup) veggie garden without any help from Mom..
and that was back when Google was an itty bitty startup and most people were still searching with altavista, or AOL, or even… sotto vocce… [a card catalogue]… Gasp!

I had very good results from fortex beans and heatwave lettuce when I lived in TX. And i had a neighbor who got decent results from Blue Lake beans. :)

Even at my clumsiest, I’ve never tipped out an entire drawer of Google all over my feet. The same can not be said for card catalogs. ;)

Thanks for the reassurance on the Fortex, Blue Lake, and Heatwave! I had a hard time finding not-horribly-expensive seeds for many of the “preferred varieties” on the extension list and wound up playing eenie-meenie-miney-mo to pick some of them. Glad to know at least some of it should work out.
