Our vegetable garden is my favourite place. When I first moved to this home, the house was so rough and in need of TLC that I spent all my spare daylight hours out in the backyard, making the vegetable garden.
There was already a vege garden there but it was very utilitarian.
I like my gardens to be beautiful as well as functional so I laid it out in square beds like a potager and planted lots of flowering herbs.
Originally the beds were a metre square as my method was based on square foot gardening.
After a few years I changed the size to 1 meter by 1.5 metres as this was more practical.
I also made the paths wider.
We got chickens in 2009 and a year later my husband put up a fence to keep them out of the vege garden as they had pretty much taken it over and ate anything worth eating.
Now it is a chicken-free area, unless they are there in a portable run, doing some cultivating.
