Begun before we moved into the house in May 2007 as a foot-wide border that surrounded the deck. The only plants were 3 hostas flanking the two steps off the deck. My husband added 3 oriental lilies ‘Acapulco’ that summer, and a Rhododendron the following summer (2008). I planted Vesey’s ‘Wild Bulb Mix’ (75 bulbs, of about 6-7 kinds), as well as a few Fritallaria meleagris, and two hostas, in the fall of 2008. In spring 2009, I added Centaurea montana, Centaurea delbeata, Geranium ’Birch’s Double’, and a few different columbines. One C. montana died, and I replaced it this year (2010); one columbine died, and I’ve moved another of the columbines out from under the shadow of a large hosta to fill in the gap.
Only one Fritallaria bloomed last year, and the flower seemed misshapen, even for a white one. This year 3 or maybe even 4 turned up, but only a purple one bloomed.
