There is so much shade here from the arborvitae that the grass was too weak and you could pull it out with your hands. So I lasagne gardened it with newspapers and wood chips (free from my son who also delivered them). I then planted it with some woodland plants and hostas. A month later, it looked as though moles or voles (can never keep them straight) had found a home here and decimated everything except a couple of plants. Later in the fall at one of our horticultural society meetings we had a speaker who owns a woodland garden nursery and during his talk I learned that it wasn’t enough just to cover the soil, etc., you needed to bring in topsoil as well. So … I guess in 2010 I’m going to have to uncover everything and add some good soil in here.

2011 – started making a walkway through this garden by using rhubarb leaves to make cement stepping stones. Lots more need to be done!
