This native garden is characterized by tall grasses among Juniper and Oak trees and is located between the Wildflower Meadow and Chicken Coop Two gardens. As an ecoregion, the Juniper-Oak Savana ranks among the top ten ecoregions for reptiles, birds, bats and other cave dwelling mammals and invertebrates.
Some of the largest assemblages of cave-dwelling bats anywhere in the world—indeed the largest aggregation of mammals anywhere in the world—roost in one of the caves a couple miles away. Millions of Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) use the cave as a maternity roost, creating a globally outstanding phenomena. The BBC has done several features on them. Living as close to the river as we do, they keep the mosquito population nicely under control. Our own resident Cave Myotis (Myotis velifer) bats are seen at dusk and dawn in our vegetable garden picking off the pests!
