I’ve decided to call this the ‘Strike My Fancy’ Garden as I seem to be planting things that, well, strike my fancy, as opposed to having any sort of formal plan. It will be interesting to see how it all grows in. I may be moving things about next year…
My goal was to plant this area with lots of interesting color and texture as the backdrop is so very, very green. I also tucked some of the plantings in the wooded area outside of my border to help break up the mass of green.
The soil is clay and sand and was covered with tufts of grass and lots of weeds. It butts up against the woods so there are cedar trees, lots and lots of salal (which grows like a weed with underground runners – ugh! – I can’t believe they sell it at the local nursery!!), pieris, huckleberry and ferns. I dug up all of the weeds and grass and cut the salal back as much as I could. I dug the dirt down and wheel- barrowed (uphill!) loads and loads of new soil.
I collected large rocks from around the property to create a border between the woods and the new garden.
