DH hates to mow the grass in the front lawn, and so it tends to get a bit out of hand before he finally gets around to it. After we extended the front beds, the small strip of grass in front of the bed on the south (left) side was really too small for the rider mower which then meant that he had to bring out the push mower. Not gonna happen! I really don’t like grass anyway; what’s the benefit after all? So I offered a solution. Why not plant a nice ground cover? This could eliminate the grass and need to mow, at least starting on the south side between the Gnomeville bed and the driveway and its perimeter of Hosta and extended to the area around the Colorado Blue Spruce. He liked it! We discussed and settled on Ajuga. Very pretty, a fast grower and no maintenance. YaY!
So we started in the summer of ‘08, planting plugs of Ajuga spaced out in that area. Problem was at first – well two problems actually… We couldn’t pull out all the grass right away because we would have one big mud pit washing the soil away into the driveway every time it rained. And of course, DH wants instant gratification – translation, full coverage and not having to weed. We had to let the grass grow at first. I would use the weed wacker to keep it under control somewhat during ‘08. Then came the rains of ’09… we couldn’t mow and couldn’t wack. The Ajuga was beginning to spread but not quite far enough yet. We added more plants, and DH actually weeded out a large 5 foot section at one point. But the weather won out. By the fall of ’09, the Ajuga is spreading and can finally be seen growing taller than the grass, not to mention all underneath the grass. We have high hopes for ’10 for an extensive amount of coverage.
