After a great deal of work our vegetable garden has real soil. Even though our property is located at the edge of a former farm (we have the wind break left from the farm as part of our property), the top soil was removed during the construction of the house. The former owners (18 years) never did any gardening. The ‘soil’ for the initial garden in 1999 was clay. We added copious amounts of compost, sand and gypsum during the first two years of the garden while removing an amazing number of rocks (between 1" and 2’ in diameter) and have continued to add compost every year since. Because we are no longer working with clay only, it is possible to dig in the garden in the middle of the summer and no longer hit rocks with every attempt to shovel soil.
