I think I can count the shed as a garden in it’s own right, it’s roof is where the clematis montanas and honeysuckle show off their stuff, and I sometimes get birds nesting in the thatch. The shed was originally divided in to 3, an outside loo, a coal house and shed, but we knocked it in to one to make it bigger. For a long time my washing machine lived in it because my kitchen was too small for it. The chap next door still has his tumble dryer in his. So you see, when I say shed what I refer to is quite a substantial structure. The roof is made of ugly corrugated asbestos sheet, there’s nothing much I can do about it, it was here when I moved in. So the best I could do was cover it up.
This rooftop garden has required some maintenance over the years, especially when strong winds have loosened the wood and mesh frames that secure the climbers, but they are well bolted and tied down now.
There is a fair amount of biomass up there, the shed is about 8 × 15 feet square, and the plants cover all of that, and half of the similar sized continuation of the brick structure next door.
