Motherhen's 'The Smallholding' garden

Garden Type: Kitchen | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Loam

I started this garden as soon as we moved in so it has been in production for about 8 years now. It is called ‘The Smallholding’ because it is so small, rather than as ‘big’ as the size that a ‘small holding’ should be!!

This spring, however, as I can now spend more time in the Garden, I am going to make it just a little bit larger, by trimming the grass back towards the path.

I always grow broad beans, potatoes, courgettes(I can’t spell that, I’m going to say “Zooks” from now on) and runner beans. This year I tried red onions for the first time and I was so pleased with the string I made I have been unable bring myself to cook them all yet!

I think I am going to try a few different things this next season and try to keep something planted and growing the whole year through. It tends to get left empty in the winter, as it is in the Chuck’s contracts that they should turn the soil over and mix in the contents of the compost heap at this time!

I am also thinking that it would be a good place to put the raspberries and fruit bushes I have acquired. The only problem is the wooden supports that I have to put up to contain the raspberries I think will detract from the view across the fields. So I am hesitating in planting the canes at the moment until I can be sure they can’t go anywhere else!
