The raised bed on the other side of our yard. ‘Lawn’ is stretching a bit, this was probably 30% grass, 70% onion weed growing on heavily compacted clay-ish soil. Hard as rock when dry, sticky and slimy in the wet.
The strategy: mulch mulch and more mulch! Layers of organics: compost, manure, seaweed, straw bringing up the worms to work the soil. Every now and then when the soil is just damp but not too wet, I dig out the onion weed bulbs from a small section of the garden. Slowly and steadily, they are being replaced by edible plants.
In the first year we grew a giant pumpkin, sunflowers, cosmos, tomatoes, melons and squash, cucumbers, lettuce and more basil, beetroots and silverbeet. The melons were lovely! Later in the Summer we had some problems with powdery mildew but still enjoyed some wonderful produce all the same. The next year we had cucumbers, tomatoes, melons and squash all growing spontaneously from the compost we had spread – all from heritage seeds! Now there is a strawberry patch where the rockmelons were growing, beautiful sweet strawbs I cant wait until they start to produce again!
Located in Sydney, Australia, Ollie's Dig up the lawn garden is an outdoor organic garden that currently contains 11 plants.
This is a Backyard garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 10. It has mainly Combination soil and receives Full Sun light.Photos
