I saw this idea at a garden centre this spring, where you take a large container, fill it with water, and plant emergent plants in special containers to make a water garden without a pond. So, I took an old plastic flower pot that would just fit inside the largest pot I have (without drainage holes), drilled holes all over it and bought a few water plants to put in it…and presto! Instant water garden! The plants did extremely well over the summer, and the cala even bloomed! This is a great, inexpensive way to enjoy a small water garden, and I plan on taking a couple of the plants in over the winter to see if I can get them to survive again for another year.

Callas are water plants? (or semi water plants?) I did not know that, although I do remember that another kind of lily (wild tiger lily) grows in the ditches in west Tennessee. Are all lilies this way?
