It’s not big, nowhere in this garden is further away from a fence or wall than the length of a tall man. Each square on the plan represents a square foot. Even so, I’m subdividing it in to little gardenletts because each area has it’s own character. To the North and South are tall fences, to the East is my house, and to the West is the brick garden shed / outhouse which extends across the whole width of the garden. The garden is wonderfully private, despite being in the middle of a town, it is not overlooked by anyone. It is a fabulous sun trap in summer and very sheltered in winter.
The function of this garden is mainly to be a space for me and the kids to enjoy and relax in. If I had a bigger garden, I would grow vegetables and herbs, but I needed the chill and play space more than anything else. One of my favourite things is to lie in my hammock and look at the light dappling through the leaves of the tree. On cool evenings it is nice to fire up the chimnea and drink a glass of wine with a friend, with all the fairy lights saved over from Christmas strung up and twinkling around us.
So, rather than list current plants in this bit, I’m reserving this for layout and history. I might even be lucky and eventually unearth photos of it in it’s original state, it has changed a lot in the 10 years that I’ve been here. I will use this space for events that affect the whole garden, the forlorn lawn, patios yada yada.
I will also use this as a stash space for plants that arrive in pots but have not been transplanted yet, it seems as good a place as any.
