Honestly, I’ve been gardening "all my life’. My Dad had a large garden and as a kid I helped with everything from soil prep., planting and harvesting. (Man, can I tell of the horrors of picking beans :-)
When I bought my own home in 1992 I started working the soil there. I’ve been planting flowers and veggies every year since. Some years less and some years more.
I usually get “the fever” and start strong. Sometime in July the weeds start to hammer my spirit and I let God take care of the rest.
It’s the “doing” that makes it fun, I find it a form of creative expression and it’s the “hope” that something fruitful will come of it that keeps me excited.
