Thank heavens for some rain this morning. I can’t find an accurate website, but we’ve had practically no measurable rain for a month or more. Other parts of the county have been hammered, but in our little strip, nothing. It rained just over a half inch, so the garden is happy.

23 Aug 2008Onion Dig 2 3 Yellow Onion Harvesting and Wen's Square Foot Garden gardenOvercast 29°C / 85°F
Dig is not really an accurate word for what I just did with my onions. I learned that when onions are ready the greens lay down and begin drying. Mine started this process 7-10 days ago. Also, what I read said that once ready, they practically spring out when you tug on the foliage.

23 Aug 2008Seed Saving 1Sunny 27°C / 81°F
The sweet basil seeds that I harvested during the pesto extravaganza last week were dry enough that they were beginning to fall out of the flowers. So today, I emptied them out and put them into a zipper back to continue to dry for next season.

23 Aug 2008Mimosa of Yesteryear?? 1We’ve lived here for over 5 years and there is not a mimosa within sight. But. There certainly was at some point. The back garden that we extended by removing sod to plant peas and lettuce in, just two weeks ago, has sprung up an innumerable number of mimosa seedlings. I go out and walk in...Cloudy 27°C / 80°F

23 Aug 2008Very Healthy, Thinned Out Mesclun and Back Fence Garden gardenThe mesclun is thriving in the back garden. I had suspected it might be a good spot for lettuce. A few hours of morning sun, dappled light through the dogwood in the mid-day sun, a brief hit of afternoon sun, then shade into the evening. I think every single seed germinated. Today I pulled the on...Cloudy 27°C / 80°F

Sewn: second 4×4 square planting in the sfg. The first plantings, almost 2 weeks old now, are starting to turn red, down toward the base of the stem. I was curious so I gently pulled the dirt away from one of them. It was red ...Cloudy 27°C / 80°F

22 Aug 2008Cut Away Broccoli Pruning and Wen's Square Foot Garden gardenThe liquid soap cocktail did the trick in killing the aphids. Upon examining the head that was under attack, there was quite a lot of damage and, frankly, it looked like something I’d never eat. So I trimmed it away and cleaned up the plant a bit. I have high hopes that maybe it will send o...Cloudy 27°C / 80°F

22 Aug 2008New HoseMy water hose was beginning to go into failure mode. There were a couple pin-holes that showed up last week. Then just last night, I noticed a few places that were beginning to bulge. It’s very old… was handed down from the inlaws. Hubby said Lowes would surely be the place. He was ri...Sunny 27°C / 81°F
