We've got yellow! 1 Mammoth Sunflower Flowering and Back Fence Garden garden
The mammoth sunflowers are flowering and oh so lovely. It amazes me how long they take to open and stretch out. They are a bee’s delight with all of the pollen. The spiders seems to have figured out they are a good place to find lunch.

Cuttings 1 Broccoli Harvesting and Wen's Square Foot Garden garden
Got a decent sized harvest of secondary florets for a yummy rice and cheddar casserole. We were too hungry to take any pictures. They literally were cut and into the dish within 5 minutes. I love kitchen gardening.

Mounding Vulcan Swiss Chard and Wen's Square Foot Garden garden
On a tip from Cmagnus, I decided to try mounding around my swiss chard varieties. They were a bit flippity-floppity and kept laying over during every rain/watering. There is something about the way they sprout… the are so top heavy and the roots are not very far under the soil… actua...

More Leaf Lettuce Leaf Lettuce Second Try Sown and Back Fence Garden garden
My first fall planting of leaf lettuce is not doing anything, so I thought I’d give it another try. The same seed did perfectly in the sfg for the spring. Could be the heat… could be the poor soil. Its cooler now, we shall see.

Growing healthy and strong 1 Royalty Purple Bush Beans Branching and Wen's Square Foot Garden garden
The royalty purple plants are growing strong and healthy and don’t seem to be suffering with this 92 degree September heat we’re getting, like the peppers behind them are. You can see just how dead my grass is in the picture. They have begun branching out, turning in to actual “...

    One Happy Salad 7 7
I’m beginning to get some things from my fall plantings that are big enough to enjoy. I pulled the first 2 radishes today and some of the mesclun (21 and 22 days, unbelievable). Used the radish tops in with the mesclun and put them with some yellow tomatoes and onions from the garden as wel...

21 days, that’s nuts! Color me tickled, I pulled the first 2 radishes today. Oh boy, they were delicious with a tiny zip, not overly hot. Each about an inch in diameter… just perfection.

    Darn those white butterflies! 6
Argh. I was just standing in my upstairs bathroom, looking down at the back yard and I counted no less than 12 white butterflies out there. (tears hair out) Late summer has brought them to me in droves. Just yesterday I picked green caterpillars off of several of my mesclun mix baby plants. The...

    Hot Salsa - Homemade Variety 5 12
Today was salsa day. The chopping, as always, is the most time consuming part. But first, I boiled hot water and poured it over all of my available ripe tomatoes, making the skins slide right off. I skinned and stemmed them carefully looking for bad spots, then gathered all the other ingredients....
