    2012 wrapup

I can’t believe I missed an entire season! It was really a great year here on the little urban homestead. My space is small enough I could set up a sprinkler to water the main beds for me, so keeping things going during the drought was not hard. I reached my goal of canning most of my own...

    Happy Harvest Day!

Bean Contender Harvesting and Urban Homestead 2011 garden
This months harvest day coincided perfectly with my first harvest of bush beans that were planted for fall. It was 50 out this morning, so it sure felt like fall too!

    Happy Bloom Day!

Bean Contender Flowering, Pea Alaska Flowering, Sunflower Blooming, and Urban Homestead 2011 garden
I ran around this morning taking pics of the newly flowering plants. The sunflowers are bird seed that started growing where the rabbits hutches used to be. They are well fertilized and quite happy over there. The shelling peas and bush beans were planted for fall.

    Tomatoes

Tomato Marmande , Urban Homestead 2011 garden , and Tomato Jersey Giant
My picture is of a Marglobe tomato taken just this morning. It’s the first of my tomatoes to start changing colors. I’m so excited about finally getting some maters, that I’ve been jumping up each morning when my alarm goes off. I can’t even wait to get dressed. I’ve just been throwing gym shorts...

It’s been so hot lately that I haven’t been out int he garden much. The weeds have grown to impressive size, but I just can’t motivate myself to go out there and cook. But the plants are large enough it’s not a problem for them. Got my first ear of corn this week. I wis...

    Experiment

Corn Hookers Sweet and Urban Homestead 2011 garden
My extension office publishes a garden calendar and I was rather surprised to see they show today as the last day to plant sweet corn for fall. Wow, that seems late for Zone 5b!! If the frost date I have of 10/15 is correct then there are just a few days more than the 70 days to maturity this c...

Got some chamomile, calendula, and dill dried this week. Got a steady flow of zucchini and some crookneck squash. And dug the first of the new potatoes from the Agria. Yesterday, I worked on getting the rest of my fall crops in. Added carrots and kale. Also reseeded the holes in the broccoli an...

    Heat and fall plantings

Urban Homestead 2011 garden , Potato Purple Peruvian Fingerling Harvesting, Squash Vegetable Spaghetti Frui...
Last week while it was in the 70s, I snuck in some fall plantings of bush beans and shelling peas. I was worried about the shelling peas because they germinate at lower temperatures and after 48 hours the temperature soared for a week with the heat wave. But as you can see in pic #2 the little...

    A Closer Look At Quinoa

Quinoa Kasala Flowering and Urban Homestead 2011 garden
I am growing quinoa for the first time this year. I actually attempted to grow it last year, but found out after all of my diligent weeding that all that lambs quarters I thought I was pulling was actually my poor quinoa seedlings. This year my quinoa patch has grown pretty much undisturbed until...
