04 May 2009Germinating Seed Starting garden , Cosmos (failed) , Lettuce, Merveille de Quatre Saisons (failed) , Chrysanthemum, Shu...Most of the peat plugs in my first seed tray have little green things in them…but I lost my sheet of paper that tells me what is what! A little mildewy fuzz so I took the lid off and left it off. I decided to sterilize the potting mix I have left over from last year to start a new tray; I p...Overcast 12°C / 53°F

04 May 2009Foul manure - safe to use? 4I got some manure from a farm today — a mix of llama, alpaca, goat, donkey, chicken, and quail, with some straw mixed in. It is mostly from the bottom of the pile and is very wet and heavy — and it smells like a really nasty diaper bucket. Some of it is yellowish, which makes me think...14°C / 57°F

01 May 2009Garden with Duck 2 Simplicity gardenOvercast 12°C / 54°F
I have joined the ranks of gardeners with duck.
My duck is, I hope, more or less temporary. She is a mallard who built her nest right next to the hose and faucet for my community garden plot. I will have to tiptoe around and try not to disturb her until the ducklings hatch and she can lead them t...

12 Jul 2008Progress Report 2 Hope gardenSunny 16°C / 61°F
Corn is up and growing. So are the weeds. The rototilled bed is considerably weedier than the double-dug bed, but corn also seems to be growing better overall. I need to get a tape measure and actually count and measure individual plants to quantify this…maybe tomorrow. In the meantime̷...

I had a lot of fun tonight with my camera in the garden. I can’t really judge the results….I admit I can’t even really frame shots with this camera….I point it in the right direction, hold it as still as I can, zoom in and out up to 5x, and push the button. The camera alwa...

11 Jul 20088 oz of peas Sugar Snap Peas Harvesting and Hope gardenSunny 24°C / 76°F
This is probably the peak of my harvest from these brave little plants, though I do hope to get more….there are still blossoms, and a few little pods I didn’t pick. I took these home, weighed, microwaved, added a dab of butter and a pinch of salt. I sat down and ate every single one o...

03 Jul 2008First Harvest 1 1 Sugar Snap Peas Harvesting and Hope gardenCloudy 21°C / 70°F
I’m excited — the first food out of this garden (except for a few nibbles off of volunteer mustard plants and volunteer radishes). 5 peas, 0.5 oz. I ate two raw and cooked the other three for 30 seconds in the microwave. Very sweet. DS turned them down. His loss.
