Afternoon visit - more sprouts, thinnings Simplicity garden , Beet, Blend (Persistence B2) Sprouting, Lettuce, Super Gourmet Salad Blend , and Basil,...
Went by the garden around 3:00 just to check on things and stayed to water since it was pretty dry — I just dribbled water around all over with the gallon jug poured through my fingers. Not as gentle as a mist from the hose, but not bad either, and almost no waste. Whatever was in Persisten...

Third Tray Update Balcony Container Garden garden , Onion, Florence Red Sprouting, Dill, Bouquet Showing True Leaves, Cosmos ...
So-so results so far in this tray. Dill – 5 are up and looking good (these are the plants that I noted looked like “thin green threads” when first sprouting). They have had true leaves for a while. Onions are up. I think just the Florence reds. NOT good germination on these, per...

I harvested one leaf! 1 1 Simplicity garden and Nasturtium, Trailing Single (Pers D1, Prov B1) Harvesting
It’s my first harvest this year, unless you count miniscule sprout-sized thinnings of arugula and cabbage from my first seed trays. I picked one leaf, about as big as a quarter, from one of my nasturtium plants and ate it in the garden. It was tender and peppery.

Planting beans, shallots and "lettuce chrysanthemum" Simplicity garden , Bean, Dragon Langerie (Persistence A3) Sown, Bean -- Bush Bean Blend (Persistence B4) S...
I put in two squares of beans — one dragons tongue and one a blend, both from Bountiful Gardens. Also a square of shallots from seed (Ambition F1 from High Seed Mowing) and “lettuce chrysanthemum.” The last item is an edible chrysanthemum, aka Shinguku. This is my third try at s...

Watermelon radish is up! Simplicity garden and Radish, Watermelon (Persistence, A3) Sprouting
It wasn’t there yesterday. I know it wasn’t. But today there are radish leaves — 9 of them — exactly where I planted radish seeds a few days ago. Amazing. This is the watermelon radish, big fat radishes with white skins, green rinds, and red insides. I am very excited abou...

    Found seeds
Just found a whole bunch of seeds….too late or almost too late for some of them for the year. Lots of bush beans, some pole beans, squash, shallot seeds. Deep sigh. Sadness. Will try to get dragon’s tongue beans in for sure…they are very cool.

Survivors on my balcony - transplanted lavendar and thyme Happy Lavender, English Transplanted, Balcony Container Garden garden , and Thyme Transplanted
I purchased both these amazing plants last summer and let them die of thirst. They sat on my balcony in their little black plastic 4-inch pots and endured a winter of heavy rain, several heavy frosts and a week of temps below 20F with snow and an inch of ice on everything. And this spring they pu...

My arugula is sprouting! It’s the first of the seeds I sowed earlier this week to make an appearance. Yesterday there was nothing there; today there are little green leaves all over two squares. Yes, I planted two squares, because I got tired and forgot where I put the potatoes. I think I w...

Strawberries are setting fruit and still blooming. Strawberries, Sweet Bounty and/or Sweet Titan Setting Fruit
Fruit has been there for a while, but is now up to … oh, the largest is perhaps the size of the tip of my pinkie finger.

    Seed strategy Simplicity garden
In all the places where I wrote that I “sowed 4” of a certain plant, what I mean is that it is my intention to grow 4. I’m actually poking a little hole with my finger, giving it a couple of little pats to turn it into a dimple instead of a hole, sprinkling a few seeds into the ...
