New Bed 1 Simplicity garden , Potato, Red Crescent Fingerling Transplanted, and Potato, Russian Banana Fingerling Tra...
I got my new bed started, using leftover purchased topsoil. Its not quite 4 feet wide and perhaps 5 or 6 feet long. I put potatoes and beans in one end and (on the 17th) dill and barley in the other. I think there’s room to add one more row of beans, but I’ll wait a few days so I can ...

Oh, dear Simplicity garden and Carrot, Blanche a Collet Verte (Persistence D4)
I decided to see what I could learn about the carrot I just planted. I bought it because the French name appealed to me…a whopping 35 cents for a little trial packet. I just planted 16 of them yesterday, an inch apart per SFG spacing. Here’s what rareseeds.com says: “A big, heav...

I looked very carefully at all my seeded squares today. The two squares of beans weren’t sprouting…but they will be tomorrow. I could see the curved stems just breaking the earth, like the backs of dolphins curving out of the water. Also sprouting: Cosmos, Shinguku Chrysanthemum, Touc...

I really should take a pen and paper to the garden…it’s quite a strain to remember what I have to document when I get home. Planted carrots with the delightful name of Blanche a Collet Verte. Remembered that I planted Mesclun blend yesterday. Planted more Merveille a Quatre Saisons le...

I added more seeds to the D row of the Providence bed…Dandelions, calendula and baby carrots. My first planting of carrots (Touchon long) are definitely beginning to sprout, as are the radishes interplanted with them. The watermelong radish – planted the same day – are just beg...

Feels like work 1 Tomato, Brandywine (Providence D6) , Tomato, Red Fig , Tomato, German Striped , and Simplicity garden
Anything that requires moving dirt with a shovel feels too much like work to me. But I got some done today. I bought a couple of metal fence pole stakes, the kind that have big flanges to go underground, at the Habitat ReStore, and stuck them in the ground and tried the Florida method recommended...

Watered today about 4. The Chiogga beets are starting to come up, just the very tiny pointy tips of their leaves. I thinned the watermelon radishes, removed an extra cabbage from one of my “just in case” extra seeds, and relished a stray arugula sprout that came up in another square.
