27 Aug 2009Beets getting old 3 Simplicity garden , Beet, Chiogga (Providence C3) Harvesting, Carrot, Touchon (long) (Providence A5) Harves...I’ve been holding a few Chiogga beets in the ground until I wanted them — they picked up the same strong throat-burning bitter oxalic acid flavor that swiss chard gets as it matures — so I can’t eat them raw. Now I know. I’ll try cooking the last couple. This is my f...Sunny 17°C / 63°F

19 Aug 2009Harvest - tomatos, beet, chrysanthemum 1 Simplicity garden , Tomato, Brandywine (Providence D6) Harvesting, Beet, Chiogga (Providence C3) Harvesting...Tomato – big brandywine, several red figs, a chiogga beet. The first 2 edible chrysanthemums. I ate all the petals off one in the garden – they taste a little peppery and carroty (just like their greens) – and brought the other home to sprinkle on a sliced beet.Sunny 22°C / 72°F

16 Aug 2009Harvest updates Simplicity garden , Tomato, Brandywine (Providence B6) Harvesting, Tomato, Brandywine (Providence D6) Harve...Tomatoes, beans, calendula. The edible chrysanthemum is in bloom, one blossom at the top with several buds. First carrots out of the French baby carrot square — long and slender and pretty and delicate, but not actually very sweet, at least not raw. Tasty, but not sweet, which I was expecting.Sunny 17°C / 62°F

OK, I know it would take me about 2 minutes to find the ans...Overcast 11°C / 52°F
