25 Oct 2008Infected! 1 6 Ching-Chiang and Balcony gardenSunny 18°C / 64°F
The ching-chiang was growing happily along until one day, seemingly overnight, the leaves got all floppy and started yellowing. I watered well, and the next day they looked better, but then I took a closer look. The central leaves (the growing tips) were covered with these icky little grey bugs. ...

20 Oct 2008Too Big For its Britches Tomato 'White Currant' (Organic) Dying and Balcony gardenThe currant tomatoes shot up like crazy and quickly became too big for the pot they were in. Coupled with a few windy days that blew the pot over, making a mess, and I had had it. Pulled. These would be really nice someplace with a real trellis. The tiny tomatoes were adorable, and had I planted ...Sunny 14°C / 57°F

20 Oct 2008Crispy Critter Maidenhair Fern 'Pacific Maid' Dying and Cave gardenI bought the fern to my office during the summer because I thought it was getting too hot for it in the apartment. It was doing pretty good. Then I got sick and was out for a week. No water for a week killed it. Dead.Sunny 14°C / 57°F

18 Oct 2008Second Chance Nasturtium 'Tip Top Alaska' Sown and Balcony gardenThe nasturtiums I sowed last winter did phenomenally, at least until it got hot. The nasturtiums I sowed this summer did miserably and barely grew at all before keeling over. These are the last of the original nasturtium seeds (packet is empty, though I have some saved from the spring). Fingers c...Sunny 13°C / 55°F

18 Oct 2008Gave Up the Ghost Basil Dying and Balcony gardenAfter 8 months (!) trudging along in a small window box the Burpee Sweet Basil were looking so sad and straggly, so I pulled them to make way for bigger and better things. The nice looking leaves have been added to the basil pile to make some pesto. Addio, Burpee Basil! After a very slow start y...Sunny 13°C / 55°F

18 Oct 2008Second Attempt Kale 'Russian Red' Sown and Balcony gardenI’m not sure if it was sporadic watering, or, come to think of it, too-high temperatures, but the kale failed to germinate. Trying again in the same pot, with the same soil, and will try very hard to remember to water regularly. Nine seeds went into the pot, which is way too many, given the...Sunny 23°C / 74°F

18 Oct 2008Failed to Germinate Kale 'Russian Red' and Balcony gardenI think the seedling in September was a decoy – or merely a weed seed. It disappeared after a few days and there has been nary a peep from the pot since. Possibly this is due to sporadic watering (I find I forget if the pot looks like it is empty).Sunny 23°C / 74°F
