The seeds I sowed Behind the Building were called Northwest Wildflower Mix, but of course I don’t still have the packet, nor do I know if it even listed the varieties. Nevertheless, the seeds, some of them anyway, have sprouted, and the seedlings have, I dare say, thrived. This is all the m...

One week and four days after planting, and a mere six days after sprouting, and my babies are ready to move up in the world. Those cucurbits sure are precocious! Their ultimate planting location is not sunny enough yet (or rather, the plants are not tall enough yet to receive the sun in that spot...

There was a massive failure of restraint this weekend as I visited both Mt. Diablo Nursery and Orchard Nursery. At least I’m doing my part to support the local economy! I went in part because I need some more vertical height on my balcony, as well as some more different, interesting plants....

05 May 2009Flowering Too 2 Nasturtium 'Tip Top Alaska' Flowering and Balcony gardenCloudy 17°C / 62°F
The Tip Top Alaska nasturtiums are also flowering profusely (look at all those blossoms!), and have been for some time. For some reason the salmon-flowered plant (the one to the far left of the photo) is supersized and much, much larger than the other plants. In fact, the other plants are looking...

Hey Katxena, look at how your nasturtiums are doing! The leaves are coming in smaller again (on the order of 1-2" diameter instead of 4-5") but it’s flowering like it’s 1999… I’m wondering if this means it would like some Nitrogen. Not that I mind the flowers, no...
