Bizaro World 1 3 Happy Balcony garden and Cucumber 'Chinese Yellow'
Question: How do you know when your Chinese yellow cucumber is ripe? Answer: When it starts to turn yellow? Seriously. Up until a few days ago this was a uniform, somewhat pale green.

Wow, I’ve positively failed at keeping up with my journal. Lots of things have died. Other things have fruited (sort of). I’ll try harder. This summer, though splendid on the anti-heatwave front, has been dismal for most of the balcony dwellers. No summer squash. One sad cucumber. (A...

Among the many things that have been happening these past few weeks is the blooming of the amazing purple salvia (I think it’s a salvia) that I bought from Orchard a few months ago but apparently never entered into my database. I think I have the plant tag somewhere still (I hope so). Never...

Back in the Game, and Worm Hotel Update 4 2 Happy The Worm Hotel garden
Has it really been a month since my last post? There’s so much to update, but for now I want to focus on the Worm Hotel. After reading about the successes and advice of Katxena and cmagnus on adding tiers to the worm bin, I decided to take the plunge and add a tier myself. I’ve had th...

    More Weekend Work 5 3
I forced myself to go out and work on the balcony again today, and I’m glad I did. Some of those plants wouldn’t have lasted much longer I don’t think. Potted up the following: 1 (rudbeckia), 3 (salmon yarrow), 4 (Indian blanket?), 6 (large gold coreposis), 7 (Mexican hat), 8 (A...

Wow, has it really been two weeks? Last weekend I potted up a bunch of the baby plants in the stage 1 baby plant nursery to the stage 2 juvenile plant nursery (aka a plastic tub that’s not big enough to hold all the pots). Some of the Dixie cup pots the baby plants were in were slimy –...

    A Little Night Gardening 3
I got a few small items checked off the list this evening after dinner: Potted up the tomatillos and currant tomatoes as they, especially the tomatillo verde, were busting their little Dixie cup pots at the seams. The tomatillos are in recycled 4" square pots and the currant tomatoes are in...

So tired, so this has to be a quickie: A few more of the seeds have sprouted in their seedling pots: Thai Sweet Basil Aromatto Basil Catnip Lemon Gem Marigold (although it’s looking sad) A few seedlings are going crazy and need to be potted up in larger (temporary) pots: Tomatillo Verde es...
