    Do peonies sink?

Peony 'Rosea Plena' Transplanted and Rose and Peony garden
I swear my peonies just got buried more deeply every year. I kept sort of scooping dirt away from the crown so they would bloom, but this spring two of them were at least eight inches below soil level. I gave up and lifted them. Two of the three came up effortlessly and didn’t have any chu...

    Chores

Rose and Peony garden , The Grove garden , Cutting garden , South Lawn garden , and South Deck garden
Doing a reasonable job of getting through the spring clean-up chores that involve actual physical labor. Cleaned out the asparagus bed, raking out all the old ferns and straw that might harbor asparagus beetle larvae. Cleaned out the Cutting Garden and transplanted most of the perennial flowers t...

    Selective Springing

    The Grove garden
The long-established crabapple trees in the yard are starting to have tiny green leaves, as are the newly-planted raspberries and one of the elderberries. The nut trees are getting little soft fuzzy buds, as is the mystery tree that I’ve decided is probably an aronia. I know it will be a wh...

Just saw the first robins of "spring".

They’re sitting in a pine tree looking around at the snow like “what the (bleep) is this?” Update: they found the heated bird bath…

    Snow's half gone

Seeing the first faint touches of green in the exposed lawn. A few of the perennials on the mound are greening up too – fescue, and dianthus I think.

    It's a start

I saw the first pink tips of bulbs coming up today, tulips I think.

    2013 Seeds and winter sowing

My first seed order of 2013 arrived today! Yay! J.L. Hudson’s seeds got here quickly – last ordered, but first to arrive: bees’ friend, tricolor hyssop, albino beets, and white Russian kale. I also picked out what I want to winter sow, and I think I might manage to keep it manag...

    Post of Malabar

I tried to grow Malabar spinach (Basella alba) several years ago and it was a dismal failure. I don’t think it was hot enough for it to be happy. I ended up buying a CSA share last summer and got loads of it, and I discovered I didn’t care for it much. In fact: I do not like it on Ju...
