I swear my peonies just got buried more deeply every year. I kept sort of scooping dirt away from the crown so they would bloom, but this spring two of them were at least eight inches below soil level. I gave up and lifted them. Two of the three came up effortlessly and didn’t have any chu...Clear 2°C / 36°F -

Doing a reasonable job of getting through the spring clean-up chores that involve actual physical labor. Cleaned out the asparagus bed, raking out all the old ferns and straw that might harbor asparagus beetle larvae. Cleaned out the Cutting Garden and transplanted most of the perennial flowers t...Clear 17°C / 63°F -

My first seed order of 2013 arrived today! Yay! J.L. Hudson’s seeds got here quickly – last ordered, but first to arrive: bees’ friend, tricolor hyssop, albino beets, and white Russian kale. I also picked out what I want to winter sow, and I think I might manage to keep it manag...Clear -3°C / 27°F -

I tried to grow Malabar spinach (Basella alba) several years ago and it was a dismal failure. I don’t think it was hot enough for it to be happy. I ended up buying a CSA share last summer and got loads of it, and I discovered I didn’t care for it much. In fact: I do not like it on Ju...Clear -14°C / 7°F
