I purchased this house in 2003 after searching for over a year. My main criteria was a large yard (not easy to find in the city), the actual house was second on the list. I made an offer on this home five minutes after walking in the door to view it with the realtor. It’s a small cape cod built in 1941 that no one in all these years had changed. I loved it immediately, from the tiny kitchen with the original cabinets to the oak hardwood floors that had seen better days.
I knew I made the right decision to place an offer on the house as we were standing in the back yard because I noticed immediately that someone at one time had been a gardener. It was weedy and overgrown but the hard back breaking work was already done. Gone were the ancient yews that adorn every yard within a 30 mile radius. A nice curved bed had been dug along the back fence.
The gardens grow exponentially every year as I remove grass to add “just one more plant.” I love my gardens and the peace they bring to my life. I have lots of wildlife in my small yard just blocks from a major crosstown street. Butterflies, bees, rabbits, possums, squirrels and birds. Every year the crowds get bigger.
I do not spray any chemicals anywhere. The good and bad bugs have to fight it out. Disease prone plants just get removed, they weren’t meant for this area if they can’t stay healthy by mother nature alone. I sprayed once my first year here, and just couldn’t bring myself to do it again. It took about three years for everything to balance out but now the garden has a healthy balance and I just ignore any bug damage :)
