The plant madness started when I was 9, with my first orchid. I’ve hoarded, collected, and traded to accumulate a goodly number of plants that I’m happy with, but that collection is constantly evolving (and growing!)
I never had any success with ‘dirt plants’ until recently. I moved into a house with 20 year old foundation plantings, soldier rows of crape myrtles, naturalized daffodils, and two splitting bradford pears. The twenty year old boxwoods, holly trees, and azaleas have benn ripped out and cut down (the boxwoods and azaleas were dug out by people who wanted them to be transplanted), so I’ve been left with, basically, a blank slate.
The beds have been expanded, and I’ve been trading and propagating to fill them out. Now, if it would only rain!
I try to do without chemicals as often as possible, but I’ve found it almost impossible in some situations. When I must use chemicals, I make sure that they’re as ‘friendly’ as possible. Having a dog, a cat, and two guinea pigs that like to play outside make it a must. :)
