will my geranium survive the winter outside

was given a geranium in a hanging pot I tring to find out if I can transplant it my garden. The answer I have been getting are yes,but they can not take a heavy frost, but nobody said how to protect them. Do you prune the plant back and cover with leaves or cover with something more substantial.
