Good-bye to some very old friends.
Kitchen garden and Cottage gardenSo it’s that time of the year around here, when one does tree work. And tree work we did. We had 5 huge mature trees removed. Plus, we had our 30 year old, 9’ tall hedges trimmed back to just 2’. To make a long story short, the work was absolutely necessary, but that doesn...Overcast -2°C / 28°F -

Clear -2°C / 28°FI have dreamed of cold frames for years. I have winter gardened before under plastic. It worked well, but had some drawbacks. Mainly, the difficulty of getting in and out of the tunnel, but also, collapsing under snow, not holding warmth as well as they should, and difficulty in harvesting. La...

Something Only Hard-Core Gardeners Can Appreciate
Clear 3°C / 37°FI just had to share this. This is either the most pathetic Christmas present ever thought of, or yet more proof of our utter insanity. This morning, I told DH that I was thinking of getting him some mushroom spawn as his Christmas gift, along with a large plastic rabbit-house bottom, filled with ...

For all of you in the same boat as me, dry/hot weather-wise, I think I found a way of making it pour cats and dogs. All you need to do is to harvest your garlic and find a shady spot in which you place it to cure. Then, decide to air out your car, by leaving all of the windows open a crack, and...Cloudy 32°C / 90°F -

Cloudy 28°C / 82°FThat giant radish from my previous journal turned out to be tender and crisp. Not a hint of woodiness, and just a normal radish spiciness. I was astounded! I ended up using it in a garden medley baked with some cheese and sour cream. Mmmm……

Rainy 20°C / 68°FOr certainly more distracting, at any rate. Case in point: I got some extremely bad news last week, and essentially been crying ever since. Today, I was doing my crying on the bed, with my head near a window that has been open about an inch or two. At some point, I turned over on my stomach and...

Siamese twins and other garden oddities.
Allotment garden , Container garden , and Cottage gardenCloudy 34°C / 93°FI love it when I find unexpected things in the garden. A bug I haven’t seen before, a weird mushroom, whatever. It’s always fun to discover. So this time around I have a few photos of the odd things I have come across in the garden over the past two months. Photo 1: a mutant Siames...

After a very dry and warm winter, and early spring, we have gone through a month of May filled wall-to-wall with rain and more rain. According to the forecast, there is no end in sight, either. I have a horrible feeling that this will be a repeat of last year’s summer which was a complete ...Storms 29°C / 84°F -

So much for the garden helper.
Kitchen gardenCloudy 23°C / 73°FLast year I read somewhere that rabbit manure is the best fertilizer under the sun for a veggie garden. And because virtually everyone in the family was out of work for an extended period of time, I had to at least try to raise as much of my own veg as possible with as little money as possible. ...

So the temps are finally in the more normal 30’s (after an unusually mild fall), and now the real fun begins-getting ready to harvest from my winter garden. I just took a peak at my brussel sprouts, and they are finally forming heads. Yay! It took a super long time, because of the warm w...Cloudy 8°C / 46°F
