19th August 2009 Back garden , Chilli Pepper Transplanted, Sweet Pepper Transplanted, and Basil Transplanted
What a scorcher today! I just transplanted a few potted plants into the ground today as we are going on holiday for 10 days and if the weather continues like this they will die. Annoyingly my tomatoes have just started to ripen and I bet they will all turn red while we are away!

8th August 2009 Back garden , Chilli Pepper Purchased, Sweet Pepper Purchased, and Strawberry Red & White Mixed Planting Out
Today I bought 2 new plants: a chilli pepper and a sweet pepper. They already have some fruit on them so I’m hoping for some sunny days to ripen them. I have planted some sweet pepper seeds but they haven’t germinated. I also bought some smaller chilli plants earlier in the year, w...

6th August 2009 Tomato Treating and Pea 'Sugar Snap' Planting Out
I have planted out the sugar snap peas with a wigwam made of canes for them to climb up. They seem to be responding well. The tomato plants had white spots appearing all over the leaves. A quick online search suggested it may have been powdery mildew. I have pruned all the affected leaves, whi...

19 July 2009 Potato 'Belle de Fontenay' Harvesting and Salad Leaves - Niche Mixed
I harvested my second set of potatoes and cleared out one container to resow some new salad leaves. Anything sown in beds is doomed one way or the other – slugs or cats.

Today I harvested my garlic as it was starting to droop over and go yellow. It is currently drying out in the sunshine. Later on I will hang it in the shed and in a couple of weeks when it has dried out I will be attempting to plait it. I have harvested enough to last for absolutely ages with s...

Yesterday I transplanted some leeks into the space created by the beetroot harvest, kindly given to me by a lady from freecycle. Today I sowed some more salad, peppers and sugar snap peas. So far only one pea from the last sowing has germinated. It’s about 4 inches tall now, tucked behind...

26 June 2009 Back garden , Potato 'Belle de Fontenay' Harvesting, Potato 'Belle de Fontenay' Flowering, Tomato Flowering...
The first batch of potatoes were flowering so I pulled them up. I think it was a bit early as there were quite a few potatoes that were too small to be useful. I also harvested my beetroot, but only 2/4 were edible – one had been eaten halfway through by something (a slug?) and one hadn&#...

Today I got the fright of my life when I discovered a toad hiding in my potato plants! I don’t know where he came from as none of the gardens around here have a pond! My salads are ready to harvest and we will be sampling some for dinner tonight!

7th June 2009 Back garden , Tomato Budding, Salad Leaves - Niche Mixed Sprouting, Thyme Flowering, Chilli Pepper Budding,...
Just a short stint in the garden this morning. I tied in the tomato plants and pinched them out. Some flower buds are starting to form. The salads I sowed last weekend have started sprouting already. I have sowed some more sugar snap peas as the last lot all died after being attacked by slugs...

30th May 2009 Back garden , Chocolate Peppermint Planting Out, Tomato Fruiting, Cuban Lily Flowering, and Thyme Planting Out
I tried out my new soil sieve today. It is excellent! My soil is very stony and using the sieve is so much easier than picking the stones out by hand. It will also come in handy for sieving my compost when it is ready. All the seedlings in the growhouse are completely dead. The weather has be...
